How to Do Highlights and Balayage with Foil: Step-by-Step Guide
October 14, 2026 · 6 min read

Foil is one of the most widely used auxiliary materials in highlights and balayage techniques. When applied correctly, it keeps the lightener only on the strand you want and gives a clean, sharp result. Below is the basic workflow commonly used in salons.
Preparation
- Cut the foil in advance according to hair length; pieces slightly longer than the hair are usually used.
- Fold the end inward by about 1 cm to form a pocket. This stops the product from leaking down.
- Prepare the color or lightener mixture according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Keep gloves, an apron and a brush within reach.
Step-by-step application
- Divide the hair into sections and secure the areas you are not working on with clips.
- Take a strand from a section at the thickness you want.
- Place the foil under the strand; the folded end should sit close to the root.
- Apply the product with a brush over the strand, evenly from root to tip.
- Fold the foil in half, then fold in from the sides to close the packet.
- Repeat the same process for the next strand; line up the packets neatly so you know which one you applied first.
- Follow the processing time recommended by the manufacturer; check the time strand by strand.
- Open the foils, rinse with plenty of water, and finish with a suitable shampoo and care product.
Common mistakes
- Taking too thick a strand: the lightening will not be even.
- Not folding the foil enough: the product overflows and stains the surrounding strands.
- Wrapping too tightly: it puts unnecessary pressure on the hair strands.
- Not checking the processing time: an unwanted tone may develop.
Note: Heat and processing times vary depending on the product and hair structure. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and, if necessary, do a test strand first.
The difference between balayage and highlights
Highlights are usually applied in regular strands from root to tip, whereas balayage aims for a freehand, naturally blended look. Foil can be used in both techniques; the difference lies in how the product is applied and how the strands are placed.
