What Is Hairdressing Aluminum Foil? How to Choose the Right Foil

Hairdressing aluminum foil is a thin aluminum roll made for hair care, used in coloring, highlights, balayage and lightening to separate strands and apply color in a controlled way. Although it is made from the same material as kitchen foil, its thickness, width and roll structure are designed for salon use.

What is hairdressing foil used for?

  • Wraps and separates strands in highlights, balayage, ombre and sombre applications.
  • Keeps the color from mixing with neighboring strands.
  • Holds the product in a specific area in section coloring and toning techniques.
  • Its foldable structure lets it hold its shape on the hair.

What does micron mean?

Micron is the unit used to measure the thickness of the foil. The thinner the foil, the easier it folds and conforms to the hair; the thicker it is, the more durable and tear-resistant it becomes. In salons, medium-thickness foils that take shape easily are the most common choice. What matters is finding a balance: foil that does not tear during application but still wraps the hair comfortably.

How should you read roll length and weight?

For foil products, the total weight, the net foil weight and the weight of the core (the cardboard spool) are all different. For example, in a roll sold as 5 kg, the net weight of the foil is lower because the core is included in the total. When comparing, looking at the net length (meters) and the micron instead of the total kg gives a more accurate result.

Which size suits your salon?

  • Small and medium salons: rolls of around 1 kg and 100 meters are practical for daily use.
  • Busy salons: 5 kg mega rolls reduce how often you change rolls and lower the unit cost.
  • Training and course environments: large rolls are an advantage where many students work at the same time.

What to look for when buying foil wholesale

  1. Are the net length, net weight and micron clearly stated on the product page?
  2. Is the foil surface smooth, and is the roll wound tightly and evenly?
  3. Does it take shape easily when folded and tear off easily?
  4. What is the cost per meter? A bigger roll is not always cheaper, so calculate it.
  5. Does the supplier offer fast shipping and invoiced sales?
Tip: Buying regularly from the same brand keeps your application habits and your results consistent.
